Yes, the earth gets energy from the sun. Fossil fuels are basically ancient, stored up energy from the sun. Humans assume that if that energy is not harnessed and put to use by humans then that energy has gone to waste. I would disagree.

enjoytheride - I don't understand what your post means in the context of this discussion. Are you saying that whether or not a transition to renewable energy is possible you have some metaphysical/theological/whatever opposition to attempting to make that transition?
gliftor - I don't know if I'd say I have an opposition to such a transition but I'm starting to question the wisdom of it, like the author of the Energy Bulletin article I linked to.
Most of our actions have unintended consequences. I just wonder what the unintended consequences of many 10's of thousands of windmills and millions of solar panels might be. And is that the path to sustainability? I don't know.
