I read the manifesto when I was 12.
Decent, but if you really want to get at the meat of Marxism, you should read:
The German Ideology
Capital Volume I (I would never suggest that anyone suffer through Volumes II & III unless you're really into 19th century political economy like its nobody's business... but, if you're into it... go for it)
Rosa Luxemburg's The Accumulation Of Capital (expanding on Volume II of Capital... in better wording than Volume II of Capital)
V.I. Lenin's Imperialism: The highest Stage of Capitalism (The more militant version of Luxemburg's Accumulation of Capital)If you're really into Marxist analyses of modern economics (in the financial capitalist sense), Hyman Minsky does a good job of converting a lot of Marx's ideas into the context of financial capitalism (even though he calls himself a post-Keynesian and not a post-marxist... anyone familiar with Marx can see the ideas he's not citing in his work).
All that said, I'm not a Marxist myself... could never really accept Hegel's historicism and am completely with old man Karl on the materialist tip until he starts off on the historicism crap.

Communism has not been realized: Stalin, Lenin, and Mao were all cruel and clever psychopaths.
Only a few historic Communists were also Humanitarians. For instance, in the writings of Che, he criticizes the Russian and Chinese models of Communism.
And reading of the pograms, mass imprisonment, common use of execution and torture in Russia and China, after their revolutions and to this day... I argue that Stalin, Lenin and Mao were despots waving either a Red Book or a copy of Das Capital and established a 1% of their own within the Party. Perhaps more akin to true Communism is the work of Evo Morales or the Zapatista movement in Chiapas. Socialism? Respectfully written...Posted 1 year ago # -
Communism will never be realized. It fails for the same reason as an unregulated market: Without regulation people are corrupt. Occupy should focus on plausible real solutions to wealth inequality in the US.
I am the 99% but the communists and anarchists in Occupy turn me off to the movement. I have spent years studying government in school. Eliminating the government is the enemy of the people. In the US the government has been the weapon of the people against unfair treatment by big companies. Today, our government has been hijacked but we CAN take it back. We can and we must. The answer is in VOTING and VOTING for progressives like Elizabeth Warren. We must VOTE in congressional elections.

I know that communists and anarchists don't make up the majority of Occupy. I know that. I went to OWS.

I agree with your statement. Getting back to at least a 'representative government' rather than Corporate Fascism, is paramount.

stalin, lenon, and mao mis-understood what marx was saying and bastardized his ideas...our job as "educated" is to revisit the ideas free of our conceptions and then we can understand what marx was getting at. i would recomend his earlier works.

This book is on my to-read list. Another book I want to read is The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith, it offers the opposite view of the communist manifesto.
